The New York Yankees are reportedly making a trade to for an All-Star third baseman who will fill their greatest position of need for the stretch run.

Ryan McMahon, who represented the Colorado Rockies at the 2024 All-Star Game, is headed to the Bronx in a deal that will send two prospects to Denver. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com was first to report the trade Friday on Twitter/X.

McMahon, 30, is hitting .217 with 16 home runs this season for the Rockies, who are expected to be active sellers in advance of the July 31 trade deadline.

In nine seasons, all with the Rockies, McMahon has a .240 batting average, .323 on-base percentage and .420 slugging percentage. He signed a six-year, $70 million contract extension with the Rockies in March 2022. The Yankees will pick up the remainder of that contract, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, owing McMahon $16 million each of the next two seasons.

Many in the New York media had linked the Yankees to Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez after the Yankees moved Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base earlier this month.

Since the move, Jorbit Vivas and Oswald Peraza have been alternating at third base. Neither is a star; Vivas is hitting .164 in 28 games while Peraza is hitting .147 in 69 games.

Given the perpetual World-Series-or-bust operating mentality that guides the Yankees and their fans, it would have been a surprise if Vivas and Peraza remained the team’s third base tandem into August and beyond.

Now, they will turn the position over to McMahon, a steady if unspectacular producer during his career in Colorado.

From 2021-24, McMahon played no fewer than 151 games a season while averaging 22 home runs, 72 RBIs, and slashing .245/.326/.422. He is considered an above-average defender at the position, and is currently fourth in Outs Above Average at the position according to Statcast.

The Yankees have been averaging 5.2 runs per game — best in the American League — despite the unspectacular production from Peraza and Vivas at third base. If McMahon is able to regain his usual form, he can help the team by sliding into the middle or bottom of New York’s lineup without the pressure of performing like a star.

According to multiple reports, the Yankees will send minor league left-hander Griffin Herring and right-hander Josh Grosz to Colorado in the trade.
