What Are REHS CEUs?

In California, Registered Environmental Health Specialists (REHS) play a vital role in protecting public health through environmental protection, code enforcement, and health education. To maintain licensure, REHS professionals are required by CDPH regulations to complete at least 24 contact hours of continuing education every two years [17 CCR § 1308(a)].

These Continuing Education Units must be approved by CDPH-recognized Accreditation Agencies to ensure the highest standards of professional relevance and academic integrity. Courses must directly relate to the field of environmental health and meet content and instructional quality criteria as outlined by the California Code of Regulations and the REHS Continuing Education Program administered by CDPH. For more details on these requirements, see the CDPH REHS Continuing Education Requirements.

As a Benchmark leader in environmental health and safety training, NATEC International has trained hundreds of thousands of professionals nationwide. REHS CEU Requirements and How to Obtain Them

What Are the Official Requirements? Registered Environmental Health Specialists (REHS) in California are required to complete at least 24 contact hours of continuing education every two years to maintain their certification. This requirement is codified under Title 17 of the California Code of Regulations, Section 1308.

This statute outlines the continuing education obligation for individuals in designated environmental health roles, reinforcing the importance of maintaining current knowledge in the field.

In addition to the CEU requirement, individuals seeking to become registered as an REHS in California must:

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree with at least 30 semester units in science courses related to environmental health (e.g., biology, chemistry, microbiology, environmental science)
  • Complete a CDPH-approved Environmental Health Training Program (EHTP) or equivalent coursework
  • Pass the California REHS Examination, which covers food protection, water quality, housing, waste management, vector control, and other environmental health topics
  • Submit a completed application with official transcripts and required fees to the CDPH Environmental Management Branch

These requirements are outlined in 17 CCR § 1304–1307, which precede the continuing education requirement in §1308.

How Do REHS Professionals Obtain CEUs?

REHS professionals may obtain CEUs by completing coursework aligned with the standards of California’s Title 17 regulations. This includes courses related to environmental health, hazardous materials management, public health protection, and occupational safety. Training programs that meet these standards are offered by:

  • Recognized educational institutions
  • Accredited training providers
  • Public health agencies
  • Professional organizations and associations
  • Online providers, as long as the course is conducted by or through an approved CDPH Accreditation Agency

Documentation of completed coursework must include the course title, number of contact hours, date of completion, and the issuing agency. REHSs are required to retain records of CEU completion for at least five years in case of audit by the California Department of Public Health.

This EPA-approved compilation includes California’s Title 17 regulations, underscoring federal recognition of the state’s air quality, public health, and environmental standards, including the regulatory foundation for REHS continuing education.

For REHS CEU credit, please contact our Training Department in advance at training@natecintl.com. When submitting your request, be sure to include the course title, date of completion, and the number of CEU hours you wish to apply toward your REHS certification. This information is necessary to ensure timely and accurate processing of your continuing education credit.
