Liam Neeson Details “Falling in Love” With Late Wife Natasha Richardson
Liam Neeson didn’t think he’d find love, actually after Natasha Richardson‘s death.
While the Taken actor recently sparked romance rumors with The Naked Gun costar Pamela Anderson, he’d spent over a decade married to The Parent Trap actress until her tragic passing in 2009.
Their love story, which began in 1992 when they costarred in the Broadway play Anna Christie, is one he looks back on in awe.
“It was great doing it every night with her,” Liam—who welcomed sons Micheál and Daniel with Natasha—recalled of their performances to The New York Times in a July 31 interview, “and falling in love.”
While they were falling in love, Natasha’s marriage to producer Robert Fox was coming to an end.
“It was not an easy time when I met Liam,” she once admitted to New York Daily News. “Working with him, what happened between us, and that becoming public knowledge in conjunction with my marriage falling apart, was kind of bad timing. So what can I say? Obviously I fell very much in love with him.”
Two years after sparking a romance, Natasha and Liam wed at a home they’d purchased in upstate New York.
“She cared for everybody,” the Oscar nominee recalled of their family life to 60 Minutes in 2014. “She has a motherly instinct. And she’d make dinners for everyone and just looked after us all.”

As their love continued to bloom, so did their careers. Natasha starred in films like The Parent Trap, Maid in Manhattan and Asylum while Liam appeared in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Love Actually and Batman Begins. But less than two months after the release of his film Taken, tragedy struck: Natasha died in March 2009 after falling on a ski trip in Canada and suffering a traumatic brain injury. She was 45 years old.
“Obviously she was on life support and stuff,” Liam added. “I would enter, and I just told her I loved her. [I] said, ‘Sweetie, you’re not coming back from this. You’ve banged your head. I don’t know if you can hear me, but this is what’s gone down. And we’re bringing ya back to New York. All your family and friends will come.’ And that was more or less it.”

Over the years, Liam has been candid about his journey with grief.
“It hits you in the middle of the night—well, it hits me in the middle of the night,” he told Esquire in 2011. “I’m out walking. I’m feeling quite content. And it’s like suddenly, boom. It’s like you’ve just done that in your chest.”
And 16 years after Natasha’s death, Liam knows she’ll forever hold a place in his heart.
“I speak to her every day at her grave which is about a mile and half down the road,” he told Inquirer.Net in 2020. “I go down there quite often, so I do speak to her as if she’s here.”
And if Liam is ready for a second chance at love with Pamela, he has his friends’ support.
“You know, Natasha was a dear friend of mine,” Andy Cohen said on a July 30 episode of his show Radio Andy, “and I’m gonna tell you something: I and all of the friends in this circle are very much stanning whatever this is.”
