Dr. Harsh has dedicated more than three decades to the field of education. She has spent a significant portion of her career at Walnut Hills High School, where she has been a high school teacher since 1998. Her tenure at this institution is marked by her commitment to teaching three classes and her active involvement in the Cum Laude Society and the Continuous Improvement Committee. Her ability to connect with her students is one of her most notable achievements, as she is appreciated not only for her teaching but also for being an approachable and positive role model.
Prior to her current role, Dr. Harsh contributed to the educational landscape at Woodside Childcare in Cleveland from 1996 to 1998. Her experience there further honed her skills in nurturing young minds and fostering a love for learning. Inspired by a her father, a college professor, she started her career in education with three years at Abu Dhabi Catholic School.
Dr. Harsh’s academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from Maharani College in 1979, followed by a master’s degree in the same field from the same institution in 1982. She then pursued a PhD in botany from the University of Rajasthan, graduating in 1987. Her education laid a strong foundation for her teaching career; although she initially faced challenges regarding certification when she moved to a new location, her husband’s determination and support helped her navigate the certification process by taking necessary exams in general knowledge, professional knowledge and her subject area.
In recognition of her contributions to education, Dr. Harsh was honored with the Golden Apple Award in 2015. She has also made scholarly contributions as a contributor of articles to Science Congress, showcasing her dedication to advancing scientific knowledge and education. She attributes her success to the support of her family as well as mentors who inspired her throughout her academic and professional journey, including Jim Byerly and Jeff Lazar.
Beyond her professional life, Dr. Harsh values family and personal growth. She is part of a family of five sisters, including a medical doctor, a dentist and two college professors. She and her husband, an economist who runs his own business, have raised two successful sons and are proud grandparents to two grandchildren.
In her personal time, Dr. Harsh enjoys gardening, hydroponics, teaching Indian cooking and traveling. Looking ahead, she envisions immersing herself in diverse cultures through travel and expanding her reading interests beyond her subject matter to include topics like politics. She also plans to spend more quality time with her grandchildren and continue tutoring students in advanced placement biology while assisting with the Science Olympiad club and state testing coordination.
Dr. Harsh’s dedication to education extends beyond the classroom as she considers volunteer opportunities with the alumni director and other community initiatives. Her passion for teaching and lifelong learning continues to inspire those around her as she remains committed to making a positive impact on future generations.
