I’ll just cut to the chase: Pretty much every Studio Ghibli steelbook is on sale right now. Most of the discounts knock around 40% off the special edition Blu-rays. Despite having a smaller discount at only 18% off, Grave of the Fireflies is at its lowest price yet. It may be the least cheerful of the bunch (we even named the saddest anime of all time), but it’s definitely a worthy addition to the shelf of any Studio Ghibli fan.

The Boy and the Heron and Grave of the Fireflies, the two most recent releases, both feature full art covers that wrap around the back of each steelbook. The Boy and the Heron is also the only movie with a release in 4K UHD; the rest stick to Blu-ray. (Here’s our explainer on the difference between those things, in case you were curious.)
The rest of the Studio Ghibli steelbooks, which were created in collaboration with GKIDS, feature a similar design: one flat background color tailored to the palette of the movie with a specific character or scene in the center. This consistency makes the collection especially beautiful lined up on your shelf. I personally have Howl’s Moving Castle, and think now’s a good time as any to give it some companions. I’m looking at you, Porco.

What’s Next for Studio Ghibli
While most of the Studio Ghibli movies are streaming on HBO Max, Grave of the Fireflies is now available on Netflix. It also happens to be next up in the lineup of Studio Ghibli Fest, which brings the studio’s movies back to theaters one weekend at a time.
While The Boy and the Heron was initially announced as Miyazaki’s final film with the studio, more recent reports have suggested the director has already moved on to his next project. What that is? Only time will tell.
